We consider a user to be a child if applicable law limits the processing of the user’s personal information because the user is under a certain age. This age varies by country. In most countries, the age threshold is between 13 and 16 years.
We obtain parental consent
When users create an account, we collect their age and country to determine if parental consent is necessary. If a child creates an account, we require consent from a parent or legal guardian to create the account.
We obtain consent by emailing a confirmation link to the parent or guardian. If we do not receive consent within seven days, the child's account and all associated personal information is automatically deleted.
Teachers may create accounts on behalf of students. When teachers create accounts for children in this manner, we rely on the teacher's authorization and do not require additional consent from the parent or guardian.
We protect children's privacy
We only use personal information from registered users under the age of 16 for internal operations, even if they are not considered children in their country. All registered users under the age of 16 receive the following special treatment:
- Advertisements are disabled.
- Third-party behavioral tracking is disabled.
- Promotional emails are disabled.
In the future, once we’re sure the registered user has turned 16 years old we will automatically remove the special treatment.
